Tau-Ken Samruk and Engineering Dobersek signed EPC contract

New mining and processing plant will be built in the Zhanakorgan district of the Kyzylorda region, relevant documents were signed during the investment forum in London on October 2 of this year.

The Guarantee Agreement on the part of Samruk Kazyna Sovereign Wealth Fund was signed by Akhmetzhan Yesimov, on the part of EBRD – Sir Suma Chakrabarti. The EPC contract for construction was signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the National Company “Tau-Ken Samruk” Kanat Kudaibergen and the Head of ENGINEERING DOBERSEK company Albin Dobersek.

A modern enterprise with a high level of automation – a digital mining and processing plant (MPP) will produce products in demand in the foreign and domestic markets – lead and zinc concentrates. The design capacity of the MPP is 4 million tons of ore per year, it will provide work for more than 1,500 people. The launch of the first stage is planned for the 4th quarter of 2020.

The tender for EPC contract (in English – Engineering, procurement and construction, i.e, “turnkey” construction) took place in two stages and ended in September. The winner of the tender was ENGINEERING DOBERSEK GmbH. According to the contract, the contractor assumes all works related to the construction of the processing plant. The project (US$ 295 million) is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and Samruk-Kazyna Sovereign Wealth Fund is the guarantor of the repayment of funds.

New mining and processing plant will be built on the basis of the lead-zinc deposit Shalkiya, which is one of the priority investment projects of the National Company Tau-Ken Samruk and is among the five largest in the world. The deposit was discovered in the period of the Soviet Union, but serious works on its development began only now. Shalkiya deposit is being developed by ShalkiyaZinc LTD, a subsidiary of NMC Tau-Ken Samruk.

The balance reserves of the Shalkiya deposit are estimated at 112.9 million tons of ore, Zn – 4.83 million tons, Pb – 1.49 million tons.
